When Yeshua speaks of love he is not speaking of worldly love. Worldly love is a sentiment, an attachment to another who makes us feel good about ourselves and reinforces our individual identity. Worldly love is an infatuation, an inflammation of passion and desire often accompanied by lust, it is consumptive by nature and like a fire it eventually burns out once it has consumed all the fuel in its path, and then all we are left with is the bitter ash.
Fritz Kunkel defines romantic love (Eros) as falling into the unconscious where we unknowingly project the deified idealized image of our contra-sexual parent unto another, and fall in love with this deified image. This deified image soon fades away and we are left with the person we never really knew. Therefore romantic love truly is an illusion and once the illusion is gone we must choose to love the other without condition or pretense, this Love is called Agape.
You may not be able love the person, the persona for it is just a mask, it is the false self, an imposter, but you must love the suffering imprisoned soul behind the mask people wear. We must learn to see past the offending behaviors of others to see the wounded child within, and then to move past the wounded child to see the Divine Spirit within all people, the same Spirit that abides in and unites us all. God is Love and so is the Spirit within all people. We are love, created in the image and likeness of God, and so is our “enemy”.
Mystical love, which is the only true love flows from the indwelling Spirit within us and extends to all of Creation without discrimination. In the world of man dominated by the self serving rational mind, it is best to think of love as a deeply rooted feeling of compassion, full of understanding and empathy, overflowing with self sacrificing kindness. When compassion is fully flowing it feels like you can never do enough for the other, you desperately want to give all that you have for their benefit expecting nothing in return. It is an emptying of self for the sake of another, it is the true meaning of meekness and the meek truly shall inherit the earth, and experience the Kingdom of God. In contrast worldly love makes us feel better about ourselves, it is an infilling not a self emptying.
It is the conditioned responses of the traumatized child that our ego finds offensive, to truly Love another we must set our ego aside, love flows outward from the awakened heart. Unconditional love is beyond the capability of the egoic rational mind of man. All unawakened people are spiritually sick, they are suffering from a sickness of the soul caused by their childhood trauma. You may not like the symptoms of their dis-ease, their conditioned responses, but you must love the wounded child within.
True love is a choice, we respond with our hearts and not from our own preconditioned egoic defensive strategies, we must choose empathy and compassion. The people we find most unlovable are those who were the most traumatized as infants and who among us cannot love a wounded child. Resisting the “evil” in another reinforces their egoic defense strategies. Therefore resist not evil, we must not judge, we must not condemn nor punish, but love our enemies and do good unto all. We must always remember that those with the most offensive behaviors were the most offended as children, they have been punished enough, and are most in need of loving compassion. Love heals all things and all that remains is Love.’
